Hi everyone,

yesterday Gluon v2022.1 was tagged. This marks the first Gluon release
based on OpenWrt 22.03 with many new features and software versions.

Some of the exciting new features include:

 - role based network configuration with inital support for VLANs
 - new null at l2tp fastd method for much faster L2TP based VPN
 - WireGuard support for fast encrypted VPN connections
 - support for ed25519 ssh keys
 - new commands like gluon-info and gluon-enter-setup-mode

Please take a look at the release notes for a complete list:

https://gluon.readthedocs.io/en/v2022.1.x/releases/v2022.1.html

Many things had to happen to make this release possible. Two major
issues that needed to be resolved were the followig:

- allowing the migration of devices from swconfig to DSA without
requiring manual intervention
- re-adding non-tiny devices lost due to the removal of the ar71xx
targets which migrated to the ath79 platform

But now that's mostly done. A few (not that common) devices are still
missing. If you've got one, please submit a filled out checklist [1]
together with the patch.
Please note that v2022.1 requires at least 64 MB of RAM and 8 MB of
flash.
It was tried to get devices with less RAM working, but they only
rebooted in circles and to date no one was willing to put the necessary
time into patches for at most another year of support.

With regards to v2021.1.x: the End of Service will be no later than
2022-10-31 [2].
This also has to do with the fact that v2021.1.x is still based on
OpenWrt 19.07 which has been EoL since April and does not receive any
updates at all.
A timely update to v2022.1 with its newer OpenWrt base is therefore
recommended.

I would like to thank everyone involved and would like to invite all of
you to our already fifth Gluon Meetup this year on the 2022-10-11 at
20:00 CEST on mumble.freifunk.net.

Kind Regards,

Tom
