I think it would be best to focus on a single topic to achieve the best 
result. Pick whatever you are interested in. :-)

That isn't needed so much. The FEC project (or any other) is based on an 
existing framework which already handles the routing protocol, sending and 
receiving packets, etc. You could focus on your project without having to 
worry about these parts too much.

with the developers there. Getting a task to get a feeling for the job should 
be no problem.
