Colin,

material does not really matter AFAIK. Needs to be metallic. Material 
availibility + your mechanic skills are more critical. All the recipes in 
the book are meant to support you to simply *do it for yourself*. So do not 
ask - just start ;-)

work also but you should make sure that

a.) water doesn't find a way to creep into the cable

b.) it is mechanically robust


Do you have means to seal it (hotglue etc.)?
