Hi -

I'd recommend you download the free 'Green Book' 'Wireless networking in 
the developing world" at http://wndw.net - there is a chapture about 
building cantennas and omnidirectional antennas. I'm sure you will like 
it. With two canantennas and free fresnel zone you can do up to three 
kilometers. There is also a chapter  about radio physics explaining the 
fresnel zone and other radio physics related stuff.

If you want to do many many kilometers you can mount a cantenna in the 
focus point of a dish.
